John - Boca Raton, FLAll my life I was convinced my successes were not of my own doing. From luck to timing, I was unable to internalized my own achievements. After a lot of coaxing form my friends and family, I made an appointment with one of Saint Mary’s behavioral health specialists. My doctor helped me to understand I had Imposter Syndrome. It was comforting to know that this was not a mental health disorder, but something that therapy could help me with.
Imposter Syndrome is defined as “a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist even in face of information that indicates that the opposite is true. It is experienced internally as chronic self-doubt, and feelings of intellectual fraudulence.”
After my on-going sessions at Saint Mary’s I am less afraid of being exposed as a ‘fraud’ and am finally able to take pride in my successes and not pass them off as luck or chance.
